The ear & the Kidney — TCM's view of hearing 耳为肾之窍——中医的听力观
Nose, Sinus, Snoring & Ears 鼻·鼾·耳 traditional evidenceWhat the evidence says:
In TCM the ear is the sense-organ of the Kidney (耳为肾之窍), so gradual age-related decline in hearing and tinnitus is seen as Kidney-essence deficiency (肾虚) and traditionally treated with Kidney-nourishing tonics. This is the classical framework and a supportive tradition — there is no trial evidence that these herbs reverse nerve-related hearing loss.

How to make it
Kidney-tonifying foods and herbs — 熟地黄, 山茱萸, 枸杞子, 黑芝麻 — taken in tonic soups or congee over time, in the TCM pattern of nourishing Kidney essence. Best guided by a practitioner for your constitution.
Why it works
黑芝麻 (black sesame) and 核桃 (walnut) are the everyday Kidney-nourishing foods TCM associates with the ears and hearing.
Classical source
The 内经 pairs each sense-organ with an organ system; the ear belongs to the Kidney. 六味地黄丸 and 耳聋左慈丸 are the classic Kidney-tonifying formulas used for tinnitus and deafness of deficiency type.
Cautions: Be clear on the honest limit: no herb restores hearing already lost to nerve damage — TCM's role here is supportive, for gradual deficiency-type decline. SUDDEN hearing loss in one ear is a medical EMERGENCY — see a doctor the same day, as the treatment window is short. New ringing with vertigo also needs a proper check.
