Huang Lian → Berberine: blood-sugar evidence 黄连素 — 降糖实证
Proven by Science — the TCM story 中医实证史 early evidenceWhat the evidence says:
Berberine (from 黄连) lowers HbA1c and lipids in multiple randomized trials and meta-analyses — in some comparisons approaching metformin. Evidence is real but trials are mostly small; NEVER self-treat diabetes.

How to make it
Studied doses are standardized berberine extracts (~0.9–1.5 g/day divided) — a pharmacy product, not a home decoction (黄连 tea is punishingly bitter and dose-imprecise).
Why it works
Additive with diet change; interacts with many drugs (it inhibits CYP enzymes) — physician sign-off required.
Classical source
Huang Lian treating "dysentery and wasting-thirst (消渴)" — wasting-thirst being the classical description of diabetes — recorded since the Shennong Bencao Jing.
Cautions: Do not combine with diabetes medication without medical supervision (hypoglycaemia risk). Avoid in pregnancy and jaundiced newborns.
